How Does The Underfloor Heating Screed Installation Work?
Underfloor heating screed installation is a process that involves the application of a screed layer over the underfloor heating system. The screed is a mixture of cement, sand, and water that is poured over the pipes or cables of the underfloor heating system, creating a smooth and level surface for the final flooring to be laid upon. Here are the general steps involved in underfloor heating screed installation:
- Preparation
The first step in the process is to prepare the subfloor. The subfloor should be clean, dry, and free from any debris. Any cracks or holes in the subfloor should be repaired, and a damp-proof membrane (DPM) may be laid if required.
- Insulation
If insulation is needed, it will be laid on top of the subfloor before the underfloor heating pipes or cables are installed. Insulation helps to reduce heat loss and improve the efficiency of the underfloor heating system.
- Underfloor Heating System Installation
The underfloor heating pipes or cables are then laid out in a predetermined pattern across the insulation layer. These pipes or cables are connected to the manifold, which is the central control point for the underfloor heating system. The manifold is usually installed in a convenient location, such as a utility room or a service cupboard.
- Fixing of Pipe Clips or Cable Ties
Pipe clips or cable ties are used to fix the underfloor heating pipes or cables to the insulation layer, ensuring that they are properly spaced and secured in place.
- Mixing and Pouring of Screed
The screed mixture, which typically consists of cement, sand, and water, is mixed according to the manufacturer’s instructions. It is then poured over the underfloor heating pipes or cables, filling the gaps between them and creating a smooth, level surface. The screed is usually spread and leveled using screed bars or leveling tools to ensure an even finish.
- Curing and Drying
The screed needs time to cure and dry before the final flooring is laid on top. The curing time may vary depending on the type of screed used and the environmental conditions, but typically it takes several days to several weeks for the screed to fully cure and dry.
- Flooring Installation
Once the screed is fully cured and dry, the final flooring, such as tiles, laminate, or wood, can be installed on top of the screed using the appropriate adhesive or fixing method.

The 4 Different Types Of Underfloor Heating Screed
There are several different types of underfloor heating screed that can be used including:
- Fast-drying screed: This type of screed is designed to dry more quickly than traditional screeds, allowing for faster installation of the final flooring. Fast-drying screeds typically contain additives or special formulations that accelerate the drying process, making them suitable for projects with tight deadlines or where quick access to the floor is required.
- Liquid screed: Also known as flowing screed or self-leveling screed, liquid screed is a self-leveling screed that is poured onto the floor and spreads evenly, filling in gaps and voids without the need for extensive leveling. Liquid screed is often used in larger areas or complex floor plans, as it provides a smooth and even surface for the final flooring to be installed.
- Sand and cement screed: This is a traditional type of screed that consists of a mixture of cement, sand, and water. It is commonly used for underfloor heating installations and has been widely used for many years. Sand and cement screed is known for its durability and strength, making it suitable for heavy traffic areas or where higher compressive strength is required.
- Anhydrite screed: Anhydrite screed, also known as calcium sulfate screed, is a type of self-leveling screed that uses anhydrite binder instead of cement. Anhydrite screed has excellent thermal conductivity and is often used in underfloor heating installations due to its ability to conduct heat efficiently. It also has a smoother finish compared to sand and cement screed, making it suitable for thin floor coverings like tiles or vinyl.
